WOMBS
“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength”.
- Barbara Katz Rothman
WOMBS Mission Statement: WOMBS facilitates access to doula services; promotes positive birth and postpartum experiences and outcomes, for women, infants, and families; and provides education on doulas and birth options.
WOMBS is Women Offering Mothers Birth Support! We are a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization in the Cottonwood, surrounding Verde Valley, and Prescott areas of northern Arizona. We provide education on doula services and referrals to the local doulas.
Women have sought the assistance of other women to support them in childbirth throughout every culture and every age. Unlike the midwife or doctor, who provides the clinical care during birth, these other women assist the birthing mother by providing comfort during labor, physically supporting the woman during pushing, and taking care of domestic needs during the postpartum period. They are grandmothers, mothers, sisters, neighbors. They are simply women offering mothers birth support! In doing so, they emmulate a nurturing model for the mothers to draw upon, which helps them to be better mothers, which builds stronger family units, which benefits society as a whole.
In the current birth setting, many women are finding their traditional support persons are lacking experience and training in childbirth and the hospital staff does not provide the continuous presence that is expected and desired. WOMBS doulas are professional birth doulas trained in comfort measures, knowledgeable about pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care, and they provide uninterrupted support from the time the laboring mother wants it until a couple hours after she has her baby.
